Performer and Director
Dionysios worked as an opera singer for five years, singing in 161 performances in the UK and abroad, participating in 46 opera productions and performing 23 principal roles. He also had a four-year career as a stage director for opera and theatre, directing 18 shows and leading creative and production teams in venues including the Oxford Playhouse, King’s Place London and Teatro Principal de Burgos, Spain. Over the years Dionysios has conceptualised many projects and has been the founding member of several artistic initiatives. Notably Opéra les Fauves, an organisation which aimed to offer operatic experience to up-and-coming young performers from London conservatories, and the early music ensemble Defleo, which he founded and directed for five years. Each of these ventures were not dissimilar to startups: an artistically-coherent and market-viable idea had to be conceived; funding, sponsorship and support had to be secured; an artistic and production team had to be recruited, trained and closely managed; a marketing strategy had to be drawn up; online and offline publicity had to be created; negotiations with venues had to be conducted and contracts signed; and of course tickets had to be sold to an audience that expected high quality and professional standards.
Working in the arts, and specifically in opera, exposed Dionysios to many different cultures and languages (Spanish, Italian, German, French), and offered him an international outlook and acute cultural awareness. It honed his communication and teamwork skills, gave him confidence for networking and public speaking, and turned him into an experienced leader. Most importantly, it nurtured his creativity and taught him to think outside the box, skills invaluable in advertising and marketing.
